There is a difference between an idiot who claims b.s. to sell books and a scientist who likes to be on TV just to get attention. Michio Kaku isn't a true believer nor a woo artist. He is just a scientist who can also be called attention-seeker.

I wouldn't go as far as calling him a proponent of the 2012 doomsday, he's just a guy who seems to not mind putting a bit of a holywood spin on certain topics. That might be regrettable as far as real science is concerned, but a proponent? No, not in my opinion anyway.

And Yes power grids do get protected when needed and satellites are space hardened. You will have more power breaks when a squirl tries to bite in the cable than a power failure caused of a solar storm.

No.

Is it true that we don't have enough? Probably, possibly, depends where the concern lay. Do you operate a satellite or electricity station?

No decision of a nuke attack will ever be depended on only one radio station.
They also have other resources like the US and other friendly countries.

Carefully allowing for Sundays, its day of rest, the failure to pick up Today several mornings in succession can mean only one thing that the UK has to all intents and purposes ceased to exist, and the Prime Minister with it.

What's so special about Today? The absence of that particular program, on that particular radio frequency, at that particular time of the morning means that the UK has been nuked? What about all the other stations during the rest of the day!

And why would that particular radio programme missing mean that the PM and the entire naval chain of command has been wiped out?

That sounds like an urban legend to me.
Even Major Kong, the B52 pilot in the film Dr. Strangelove, radioed base for confirmation before proceeding with his nuclear bomb attack.

However, it would take an awful lot more than one radio programme not airing for any submarine captain to launch. Already being at war, for example would be right up there at #1.

If such a directive exists, I suspect it's been around for a long time and has just never been rescinded. Many of the facts presented on QI fall into that category.

Journalist and historian Professor Peter Hennessy claimed in his book, Secret State: Whitehall and the cold war 1945 to 1970, that he had been reliably informed that the test a commander of a British nuclear-missile submarine was to use to determine whether the UK has been the target of a nuclear attack (in which case he had sealed orders which may authorise him to fire his nuclear missiles in retaliation), was to listen for the broadcast of Today on Radio 4's frequencies.

If a certain number of days pass without the programme being broadcast, that was to be taken as evidence that the UK had been attacked and the orders must be executed.

Hennessy has never revealed his sources for this story and some, including Paul Donovan who authored a book about Today, have expressed some scepticism about the claim.

I can explain how I see it leading to a war but you will think I'm a mad conspiracy theorist and I am not. But I heard on the English TV program QI that the captains of the submarines carrying the British nuclear warheads have instructions if the today program is not on the radio then to assume the worst and follow pre written instructions. So if power cuts mean the today program isn't broadcast then they follow pre instructions then maybe they inadvertently start a war. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's how my mind works unfortunately. I am getting treatment for my anxiety though so hopefully not for much longer.

And you are right I didn't notice the 2003 event. But I was only 20 and probably in the pub :-)
