Wow, Astro. That almost made me squirt soda out of my nose.

Especially this part..

Does anyone know what 'amateur' means?" But then one time this little girl stuck her hand up and said "It means you're not very good"

It actually makes me wonder what I'm missing, when people are able to do school presentations. Hmm..

Lawrence E. Joseph is a 2012 woo-woo who wrote a book called "Apocalypse 2012." In his book, he pulls out all the usual stops, throwing out a hodgepodge of liberally-interpreted "facts" with hilarious fantasy for the purpose of creating a tale that people will buy. The fictional work was published in 2007, I think, so Joseph relies on the old NASA/NOAA report of a solar max in 2012. These days, he continues to hold that line, even though the projected date was pushed back to Spring 2013 in May 2009. I guess he can't bring himself to admit, "Well, okay, my book is outdated."

What little crap he does mention that has some basis in reality (possible vulnerability of power grids, Yellowstone volcano, etc.) has no relevance to 2012 claims. Like most woos, he just shoehorns all of it into one place, because it sells.

I like the way Dr. O'Neill explains things too. That's why I asked him to come on the show and comment. Plus he is a solar astrophysicist, and not a measly little amateur astronomer like me.

BTW there's a funny story about that. In my 5th grade astro presentations I used to say "I am an amateur astronomer. Does anyone know what 'amateur' means?" But then one time this little girl stuck her hand up and said "It means you're not very good" :-)

[edit: we're at the limit of the threading so the forum is doing some weird stuff]

Going by what I've read? Let's see his scientist credentials, shall we?

"Raised in Brooklyn, New York, educated at Stuyvesant High School, Brown University and University of California at San Diego, Joseph now lives in Los Angeles, California with his two young children. Hobbies include swimming and soft-sand running."

From his bio. He mentions no training as a solar expert. Good.

He also immediately compares his 2012 theory of a cataclysmic solar flare to "The Mayan Prophecy". You know, the lack of Prophecy considering 2012? Yep. That one.

He is well known for showing up on many conspiracy theory shows, purposely releases "viral videos", and overall this guy is a piece of .

"Joseph has done more than 200 film, television, radio and print interviews promoting the book, including Montel Williams Show (3/08); featured guest on a two Discovery Channel documentaries, three History Channel documentaries, Sci-Fi Channel."

Let's see. Woo-Woo Channel, Woo-Woo Channel, and Woo-Woo Channel. Nice.

Scumbag.

Keep in mind the one major nail-in-the-coffin for this lowlife: He's only selling his information to possibly help the world. Only. Selling. This is not free information, you must buy it.

Yeah. Another scumbag with no formal education in the field he attempts to claim he knows of.

Astrogeek, add him unless you know something I don't, imo.

Just finished the rest of the interview with Ian O'Neil.
He was awesome in the interview, as were you, Astro, and your daughter, whom I thought was hilarious at the beginning of the recording.

This may come off as awkward, but I like the way that O'Neil explains things. Perhaps it's his accent? Either way, it's very, very useful when a subject of Solar Flares pops up. Might start referring people to that audio clip.

Tata.

Grasp every second of life like it's your last.

Well said, Moo.

Coming from someone who practically grew up in the streets and grew up in a harsh family, to now being able to watch TV, drive a car, use the internet and annually travel to Amsterdam for the annual Q-Dance festival, I couldn't agree with that statement more.

Somewhat similar: When you grow up the way I, and others have, fear is all that you have and take it from me, that's no way that you want your children to grow up. It's really not.

Wikidot has had issues with hotmail addresses

Anyone having issues subscribing to Wikidot should consider Gmail, GMX, AIM Mail, Inbox or, Yahoo Mail.
I use four out of those five. GMX, I have no experience in, but I've heard that it's fantastic and reliable.

Or, if you need a disposable e-mail, I recommend 10minutemail. Easy and safe and I'm pretty sure that It would work with Wikidot for registration, but you kind of have to hurry to get the confirmation e-mail.

Hope this somewhat helped.

Well I did try to make an account but this site isn't really letting me sign in. By all means, Astrogeek, if you gotta ban Guest Commenting, ban Guest Commenting.

This James guy did just admit to only wanting to cause grief and chaos, which as I mentioned before was obviously his goal from the get-go. He masked it behind a thin veil of nobility, but had that veil ripped away and is now going "HURFDURF DISINFO GOONS I WILL BE A HEEEEERO!"

Now, James, I'm going to be nice. Why? Because I'm tired of you. I'm tired of the crap you spew, on account of being wrong. You were wrong when you said this website was pulling the wool over the eyes of the public.

1) This website was made for the sole purpose of debunking the 2012 Doomsday Hoax. To demand it needs to add the note that "Well it's possible between now and the rest of time, a powerful CME could blow out our power for a short to extended period" isn't really needed. Why? It's just not the purpose of this website.

2) Repeat 1.

No one here is a "Disinfo Agent". We're not trying to keep people unaware of natural (if not just flat-out rare) disasters. That just isn't the point of this website. There is no reason for us to go into great length of what COULD happen because that just isn't the point here. Every year, every month, every week, every day, every hour, every minute, EVERY SECOND brings the risk of some sort of disaster.

Should people live in fear of every moment of their life? Of course not. That's no way to live. Grasp every second of life like it's your last.

Now then, with that out of the way, James, you need to just accept you were wrong. Wrong about what the website had posted before, wrong about trying to claim Astrogeek removed it to cover his butt, wrong about the intentions of the website, and just WRONG period.

You continue to cite websites, cherry-pick sentences, and slap them down screaming "OBJECTION!". Well guess what? I reach over the stand, smack you across the face, and scream "HOLD IT!". You're doing what every major news station does these days, and that is cherry pick information, the juiciest possible, and tweak it just slightly, to try to get yourself evidence.

The same website, the NASA Solar Storm Warning one you like to throw at us so much, we've used against you time and time again. Yes! NASA always warns people of Solar Maximum because of it's potential risks! This hasn't changed! But they're currently not expecting much of anything.

Yes, it's true, NASA is experimenting and testing ways to safeguard satellites from dangerous CMEs! This is a fact!

And I refuse to go full circle with this, again. James, you were wrong. You're not wrong about the risks CMEs can pose, but you're wrong on every other count you've brought up.

Just. Apologize. And. Get. Over. It. You do not need to be right. It's fine. Then again, I just want you to get an IP ban at this point. You already said you're just staying here to grief.
