Regarding Argüelles' claim that the Maya came from another planet:

I've lived in a Maya region of Chiapas, Mexico for nine years. Every day, I work and converse with people who look like they just stepped out of an ancient Maya mural, then changed into blue jeans. I've donated blood for some of them. Even though I'm a White Devil Honky Slave Master Northern European, all of the recipients prospered.

Argüelles would probably explain this by saying that the Maya Star Lords genetically engineered themselves to be able to accept transfusions from low-born sons of swineherds like me. In that case, I'd like to know why they didn't make themselves immune to the smallpox and plague that killed 90% of them in colonial times. When he's explained that, I'll ask why they didn't ensure they wouldn't get heart disease and diabetes from consuming Coca Cola and junk food.

Hi Amber;

If the question is whether or not Coe still thinks that the Maya predicted some kind of apocalyptic event for 12/21/2012, the answer is that I don't think so, but I'm uncertain.

I am given to understand that Coe included the line in the first edition of his book, but that it was removed from later editions. I'll ask Dr. Hoopes about it next time I talk with him… I believe that Coe was Hoopes' PhD thesis advisor.

Coe thought the Mayans might have believed the end of the world was in 2012. Other people studying the Mayans don't agree with this. It also doesn't mean that he believed the end of the world would be in 2012.

What Coe said was: "There is a suggestion … that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [baktun]. Thus … our present universe … [would] be annihilated on December 23, 2012, when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion."
He's saying what event he thought the Mayans might have predicted to coincide with the end of the 13th cycle of their Long Count calendar. This is a long way from believing it oneself. This interpretation is largely discredited by more recent scholars of the Maya.

By the way, Coe (as a scholar), was merely reporting on what he thought that the Maya believed… that the 'end date' of 13.0.0.0.0 was linked to an 'Armageddon' by the Maya. I believe that since 1966 this viewpoint has been revised significantly.

Arguelles, on the other hand, is not the objective scholar. He believes that 2012 is some kind of transformative event.

Arguelles states at http://www.13moon.com/time-is-art.htm that the "end of the world" is a metaphor for the end of the 'world of ego and materialism'. He also claims to be the first to publish about it in his book The Mayan Factor (1987), although this is not the case, as Michael D. Coe published about it in the first edition his textbook The Maya (1966).

Arguelles appears to be largely misinterpreted on this issue, as his position is that of a '2012 transformationalist'… my term for someone who believes that 2012 marks some kind of 'turning point' or 'consciousness raising' or some similar transformative event… not necessarily someone who predicts doom and destruction. Regardless, Arguelles' hedging on the topic has lead many people to accept the belief that 2012 marks a date to be feared.

Hi Amber,
Arguelles doesn't say the world will end or that we will die. He thinks it will be a spiritual evolution or something silly like that.
I can't think why you would be concerned about the opinions of someone who thinks he is a reincarnated Mayan priest, changed his name accordingly (to Valum Voltan), and tried to sue the United Nations for refusing to change to the Mayan 13 month calendar. He is a complete wackazoid.

please tell me José doesn't actually say the world will end on that day. im confused because ive researched him a bit before and he says their will be a change but i dont understand why he whant us to use the other calendar, if we dont does he think we will die? whats hes book about and how did he find out about the mayan calendar? also at the top it says he made his first prediction what does that meen, what was he predicting and was he predicting an event to happen on 1995 or was that the day he had the prediction?
