It all depends on the size of the object. No body large enough to cause worldwide destruction could reach us without being detected well in advance. Small meteorites hit us on a daily basis, and small meteoroids pass by us sometimes without being detected until just before or after they pass.

Large objects are easy to find and we have their orbits plotted out for the next 100 years.

So, there is nothing large enough to cause us any major problems coming in 2012 or we would have detected it before now. Many meteoroids too small to cause any major problems could approach us with no prior warning.

There is nothing coming in 2012 and we would have no warning sound different to me.

Sorry, but where did he say that? If there is warning or not depends on the size of the object. None of the objects the NEO is currently watching is on route of collision with Earth. Of course, small objects can hit the Earth, but could never cause a doomsday.

Can something hit earth from outer space that we did not discover yet? The answer is yes.
However, will something hit Earth predicted by any domesdayers? The answer is a big no!
Domesdayers are unable to predict anything, since they are plain lunatics or very good in marketting to sell books.

Is there something out there coming towards us? There is no evidence for anything big. Only tiny ones and any damage will be local.

I don't mean to be rude but, There is nothing coming in 2012 and we would have no warning sound different to me. I mean, if you say we would have no warning then you can't say but its not imminent because if we knew it was imminent then that would be a warning.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry to post again, but I read this site as well as Ask an astrobiologist, and I've just read the universe today post linked to at the bottom of your comet page. I'm a bit worried that I find what appear to be discrepancies in the accounts, yourselves say no risk of a comet in 2012, Ian O'Neil (universe today) says we are safe for a few decades and yet David Morrisson says we will have no warning. So what is the truth, are we sure there will be no comet next year or could the first we know of it be when it hits? I am trying to get this straight in my head, I'm sensible about looking for information and never visit abovetopsecret or godlikeproductions I am not looking to be scared. butthe above three sensible scientific sources seem to be saying different things.

my advice, get thee to a star party. Go look at Jupiter, and check out the different kinds of scopes that people have, and see what they like, and what they don't like about each kind. The NASA Night Sky Network should help you find a local astronomy club.

Hey guys, I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but I've been in awe of Jupiter in the past few weeks as well. So bright!

I was wondering if you could point me to a good forum for astronomy newbies, which would help me with the basics (get a simple, not too expensive telescope, for instance)?

I can't believe how bright this planet is to the naked eye… I WANT to see it in more details!

Yeah, it also appears to rise from the horizon and go higher into the sky and then from there moves across the sky by the hours, interesting never knew planets do that

Because planets don't do that. Earth does that by rotating ;-)

When I first saw Jupiter in July this year (yes, total astronomy novice) I was totally awestruck by it. Need a new planet to fixate on, Jupiter is just showing off now. I'll get mars if it's the last thing I do.

The trouble with Mars is that it moves more quickly than Jupiter and we have to do a couple of laps before we catch up with it each time.

Yip, that's Jupiter alright. It's at opposition right now, it's an awesome sight. Honestly wishing one of the other planets would make an appearance before my bedtime. Mars is acting like a jerk, I just can't stay awake long enough to see it rise.

Strange question. Before I go any further, I'm going to have a stab and say you're seeing Jupiter.
