Yes, I agree. This is not only "getting out of control", this is so far out of control that some people are contemplating suicide. Now, there's a lot of stuff going on in that situation, and I think that if people just learned to take a more skeptical view of things, to stop and ask a couple of obvious questions instead of simply believing everything, that they would be a lot better off.

But, a lot of the blame for this falls on the people making up these things too. Words have power, and whenever someone chooses to say something, they bear a responsibility for the consequences of what they say.
