How about this? It was going to hit us but it ran into a photon belt near Orion and changed its trajectory.

The Bad Astronomy site from a few years ago has an article on the crackpot predictions for the close pass of asteroid 2007 TU24 in 2008, including the fact that it was 'electrically charged'. One particularly crazed doom-monger never let go of the claim that some delayed effect would be felt even days after it had disappeared into the distance.

I suspect we'll see the usual influx of "I never said it would definitely hit us" excuses. This method of backpedaling is employed to great effect by numerous YouTube doomsayers, and their disciples seldom fail to be convinced by it.

We might also see the patented Retrov Retreat™ (aka the Trevor Tail Turn™), wherein the claimant asserts that this was but a test for humanity, and all the "hatred" says more about the skeptics than the utter failure and lies say about the doomsayers.
